  1. Medical claim. “Clears acne” says the product treats a condition. That makes it a medicine in the eyes of the law, not a cosmetic.
    Claim reworded. Clears acne in 7 days → Leaves skin looking clearer and calmer It now describes how skin looks, so it stays a cosmetic.
  2. “Free from” that runs others down. UK claims rules don't allow wording that suggests safe, permitted ingredients are harmful.
    Claim taken off. Free from nasty chemicals → removed A factual claim like “fragrance free” can be used where it's true.
  3. Ingredients in plain English. The list has to use standard INCI names, and fragrance allergens above 0.001% in a leave-on product have to be named.

  4. US units only. The quantity needs to be shown in metric.

Prices in pounds sterling. VAT added where it applies. At renewal we give 30 days' notice of any price change, and it is never more than 10%. Your final price is confirmed in a written quote after we've seen your range.

Halden is a small practice, run from Bristol. I set it up because the UK rules for overseas beauty brands are clear enough, but the help on offer tends to be priced for much bigger companies, or bolted onto an EU package as an extra.

I wanted to do one thing properly. A fixed yearly price you know in advance. Every product read line by line before our name goes on it. A reply within a working day, from the person doing the work. If your range isn't a good fit, I'll say so and, where I can, point you to someone who is.

We already have an EU Responsible Person. Do we need you as well?

Yes, if you sell to customers in England, Scotland or Wales. Since Brexit, Great Britain needs its own UK-based Responsible Person and its own notification. Your EU Responsible Person still covers the EU and Northern Ireland.

Do you need our full formula?

Yes. As your Responsible Person we're legally responsible for checking it. It stays confidential, is only used for UK compliance, and we're happy to sign an NDA first.

We don't have a safety report. Can you help?

Yes. We work with qualified safety assessors and coordinate the report for £150 per product, plus the assessor's own fee, which we pass on at cost.

How long does it take?

Once you've signed, paid and sent your documents, we aim to notify your products within 5 working days. If your labels need changes, the clock runs from when we have the final version. Rush setup in 48 hours is available.

Will customer returns come to your address?

No. Our address is for official correspondence only. Customer service and returns stay with you.

Can we leave?

Yes. Either side can end the appointment with 60 days' written notice. We help you hand over to a new Responsible Person and keep your file for the 10 years the law requires.

Do we pay before or after you check our products?

You pay once you've accepted the written quote, before we start. If after reviewing your files we decide we can't act for you, we refund the annual fee and keep only the setup fee.
